How much chai patti does a café need each month?

Short answer

Multiply the cups you serve a day by the grams of chai patti in each cup and by 30, then divide by 1,000 to get kilograms a month. For example, 100 cups a day at 3 g per cup is 300 g a day, or 9 kg a month: 18 pouches of 500 g. Add 5–10% for tasting and spills.

Grams per cup is your recipe: weigh it once. Kilograms = cups a day × days × grams per cup ÷ 1,000.

The formula

Chai patti per month (kg) = cups a day × grams per cup × 30 ÷ 1,000

Kilograms a month = cups a day × grams per cup × 30 ÷ 1,000. Pouches are rounded up.

What changes the grams per cup

  • Strength: a kadak cup takes more chai patti than a light one.
  • Cup size: a cutting glass (about 100 ml) takes less than a 150–200 ml cup.
  • Milk: more milk in the recipe needs more tea for the same colour.
  • Boil time: a longer boil draws out more colour, so some kitchens use a little less tea.

Cost per cup

At ₹250 + GST for 500 g, chai patti costs ₹0.50 a gram before GST. At 3 g per cup, the tea in each cup costs ₹1.50 before GST (₹1.58 with 5% GST); at 4 g, ₹2 (₹2.10). Milk and sugar usually cost more than the tea.

How often to reorder

  • Keep one to two weeks of stock, so a late delivery never stops the counter.
  • Reorder when you open the last few pouches, not the last one.
  • Order once a month for a steady price and less admin.
