Bay Leaf
तेज पत्ता (Tej Patta)
Cinnamomum tamala
📍 Origin: India
Aromatic bay leaves (tej patta) — adding a subtle, warm herbal depth to our Ayurvedic and Turmeric chai blends.
In Our Chai
Bay leaf in chai (tej patta) brings a subtle earthiness — one of the quieter but essential spices in traditional masala chai patti.
Bay leaf is a foundational herb in Indian cooking and Ayurvedic medicine. Its warm, slightly floral aroma adds a subtle background depth that makes a chai blend feel more complete and complex.
In our Ayurvedic CTC Chai and Turmeric CTC Chai, bay leaf works quietly in the background — you may not identify it individually, but you would notice if it were missing.
You can taste Bay Leaf in our hand-blended chai range — try it in Ayurvedic CTC Chai and Turmeric CTC Chai. Each blend pairs Bay Leaf with carefully balanced complementary spices.
Learn more about the science of Bay Leaf — known botanically as Cinnamomum tamala in the Wikipedia entry on Bay leaf, which covers its history, botanical classification, and traditional uses.
Indian bay leaf (tej patta) is from a completely different plant than European bay leaf. It comes from the Cinnamomum family — the same family as cinnamon — which is why it has warm, slightly sweet undertones.
