Assam Orthodox Tea
असम ऑर्थोडॉक्स चाय (Assam Orthodox Chai)
Camellia sinensis var. assamica
📍 Origin: Brahmaputra Valley, Upper Assam
Traditional whole-leaf Assam tea — adding smooth depth and nuanced flavour complexity to our premium chai blends.
In Our Chai
Assam Orthodox tea is made using the traditional rolling method rather than the CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) process. This produces whole, twisted leaves that brew a smoother, more nuanced cup with layered flavour complexity.
In several of our blends — Calcutta Street, Assam Royal, Shahi Kesar, and Rose Mulethi — we add Assam Orthodox alongside CTC to create a richer, more textured drinking experience. The Orthodox component adds depth and a subtle sweetness that CTC alone cannot deliver.
You can taste Assam Orthodox Tea in our hand-blended chai range — try it in Calcutta Street CTC Chai, Assam Royal Chai, Shahi Kesar CTC Chai, and Rose Mulethi CTC Chai. Each blend pairs Assam Orthodox Tea with carefully balanced complementary spices.
Learn more about the science of Assam Orthodox Tea — known botanically as Camellia sinensis var. assamica in the Wikipedia entry on Assam tea, which covers its history, botanical classification, and traditional uses.
Orthodox tea processing preserves the whole leaf shape, resulting in a brew with more subtle, complex flavours compared to CTC. The same Assam leaf, processed two different ways, produces remarkably different cups of chai.
