Cardamom in chai — known as elaichi chai to most Indian homes — is the quintessential aromatic spice in our masala blends.
Cardamom is the soul of Indian chai. We use whole green cardamom pods from select growing regions in India — crushed just before blending to preserve their volatile essential oils. The result is that signature burst of warm, slightly sweet aroma the moment hot water hits the leaves.
In our Flavourful Chai, cardamom works alongside cinnamon, clove, and black pepper in our proprietary 4-spice masala. In Bombay Cutting Chai, it plays a supporting role to ginger, adding aromatic depth to every cutting.
Cardamom is the world's third most expensive spice by weight (after saffron and vanilla). Ancient Egyptians chewed cardamom pods to freshen their breath — a practice still common in India today.
